Although legally incorporated as Willow Lake Golf Club, Inc., the club has long been known throughout Metter and Candler County as Willow Lake Country Club. Its roots trace back to early 1963, when a group of local visionaries began meeting—sometimes in the community center, other times around a table at a local restaurant—with a shared goal: to bring a golf course to their community.
That vision became reality on October 25, 1963, when the club officially received its corporate charter. Just days later, on November 5, the first organizational meeting was held with approximately forty people in attendance. During that meeting, by-laws were adopted and the club’s first leadership team was established, setting the foundation for what was to come.
The club was created to fulfill a long-standing need for a local golf course—but it quickly became much more than that. Named for the series of willow-lined lakes that sit at the heart of the property, Willow Lake would grow into a place rooted in both recreation and community.
Construction began on land just north of Metter, originally part of the J.C. Bland, Sr. farm. The first three holes were laid out through a collaborative effort, and the course soon opened for play. By July 1, 1964, the course had expanded to nine holes and officially welcomed golfers to enjoy the new facility.
As the club continued to grow, so did its amenities. The original clubhouse—converted from the Bland residence—served as an early gathering place for members. Though tragically destroyed by fire in April 1965, the club quickly rallied, rebuilding on the same site and continuing forward with determination.
Over the years, Willow Lake has seen steady improvements, including the addition of a swimming pool, tennis courts, and expanded facilities supported by strong member involvement. One of the most significant milestones came in 1989 with the purchase of additional land, allowing for the expansion to a full eighteen-hole course and the development of surrounding residential properties.
Today, Willow Lake Golf Club stands as a testament to the vision, dedication, and community spirit of those early founders. What began as a simple idea has grown into one of South Georgia’s most cherished golf destinations—offering a place where tradition, recreation, and community continue to come together.
